DOC: Alto Adige or Dell'Alto Adige (Südtirol or Südtiroler)

In the territories of 50 communes, including the capital, of the attractive and welcoming Altoatesina region (or the autonomous province of Bolzano), vineyards situated mostly on, terraces provide a wide variety of white, rosé and red wines that are combined under the single denomination Alto Adige o dell'Alto Adige (in German, Südtirol or Südtiroler). The appellation may or may not be accompanied by an indication of the color or the variety used or by the name of the geographical subdenomination;

Bianco (Weiß)), Passito, Spumante, Spumante Rosè, Moscato Giallo (Goldmuskateller), Pinot Bianco (Weißburgunder), Pinot Grigio (Ruländer o Grauer Burgunder), Chardonnay, Riesling Italico (Welschriesling), Riesling, Müller Thurgau, Sylvaner (Silvaner), Sauvignon, Traminer Aromatico (Gewürztraminer), Kerner, Moscato Rosa (Rosenmuskateller), Lagrein Rosato or Lagrein Rosé (Lagrein Kretzer), Lagrein or Lagrein Scuro (Lagrein Dunkel), Merlot Rosato or Merlot Rosé (Merlot Kretzer), Merlot, Cabernet – Cabernet Franc – Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Nero (Blauburgunder or Spätburgunder), Pinot Nero Rosato or Pinot Nero Rosé (Blauburgunder Kretzer or Blauburgunder Rosé), Malvasia (Malvasier), Schiava or Schiava Grossa or Schiava Gentile (Vernatsch or Großvernatsch or Edelvernatsch), Schiava Grigia (Grauvernatsch).

This denomination also includes wine with an indication on the label of two varieties with reference to red wines produced with the two varieties mentioned—the preponderant grape is cited first and the synonym Cabernet is used whether for Cabernet Franc or Cabernet Sauvignon. The varieties must be used in a ratio superior to 15% of the total. When the wine is issued for consumption, it must have the following characteristics;


Cabernet-Lagrein, Cabernet-Merlot, Merlot-Lagrein)

This appellation also includes wines that are identified with the name of one of the six recognized geographical subzones.

Colli di Bolzano (Bozner Leiten)),
Meranese di Collina or Meranese (Meraner Hügel or Meraner)
Santa Maddalena (St. Magdalener)
Terlano (Terlaner),is a white wine produced on the hills situated entirely within the territory administered by the commune of Laives and parts of those of the communes of San Genesio,Meltina, Tesimo, Nalles,Andriano, Appiano and Caldaro.The typologies are;
(Bianco, Pinot Bianco (Weißburgunder), Chardonnay, Riesling Italico (Welschriesling), Riesling, Sauvignon, Sylvaner (Silvaner), Müller Thurgau, Pinot Grigio (Ruländer)).
All the wines of this subdenomination, if produced in the oldest zone, consisting of the communes of Terlano, Andriano and Nalles, may be identified on the label as Classico (klassisch o klassisches Ursprungsgebiet).

Valle Isarco (Eisecktal o Eisacktaler), this white wine is produced in different ver­sions in the long and narrow valley carved out by the Isarco River in parts of the communal territories of Barbiano, Bressanone, Castelrotto, Chiusa, Fiè, Furies, Laion, Naz-Sciaves, Renon, Velturno, Villandro and Varna. The corresponding varieties are used in a minimum ratio of 85% and with the possible addition of other white grapes recommended and/or authorized for the zone. (Traminer Aromatico (Gewürztraminer), Pinot Grigio (Ruländer), Veltliner, Sylvaner (Silvaner), Müller Thurgau, Kerner, Riesling.
The following red wine with an indication of the locality belongs to this subdenomination. It is made from Schiava and/or Portoghese and/or Lagrein and/or Pinot Nero: Klausner Laitacher
If produced with grapes from vineyards in the communes of Bressanone, Naz-Sciaves and Varna, all the wines of this subdenomination may be identified on the label as di Bressanone (Brixner).

Valle Venosta (Vinschgau)- this white and red wine in various versions is produced in the most suitable zones of all or parts of the territories administered by the communes of Castelbello-Ciardes, Laces, Naturno, Parcines and Silandro with at least 85% of the correspond­ing variety, to which may be added grapes of the same color recommended and/or authorized for the zone.
(Chardonnay, Kerner, Müller Thurgau, Pinot Bianco (Weißburgunder), Pinot Grigio (Ruländer), Riesling, Traminer Aromatico (Gewürztraminer), Sauvignon, Pinot Nero (Blauburgunder), Schiava (Vernatsch).

The wines Alto AdigePinot Bianco, Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio, Riesling, Sauvignon, Traminer Aromatico, Moscato Giallo, Müller Thurgau, Sylvaner, Kerner and Veltliner wines, with or without indication of the sub-zone, with aging of no less than two years, beginning on October 1 of the year of the harvest and with a minimum alcohol level of 11.5° can be described on the label as a Riserva.

In addition, beverages made from grapes subjected to partial drying (on the vine or after the harvest on grates) can be produced in "Passito" and Vendemmia Tardiva (late harvest) versions. The first has the same characteristic color as the grapes used in its blend, an appealing, delicate and characteristic odor and a sweetish or sweet, full and harmonious flavor characteristic of the original variety. Minimum alcohol: 16°.
Issued for consumption after June 1 of the year following that of the harvest.
The second offers the same characteristics as the preceding type but with a minimum alcohol level of 13.5°.

The labels of all the Alto Adige wines may bear a reference to a production "micro-zone" with the use of the term Vigna (Gewächs or Wachstum), followed by the place name.
